Money-Saving Tips for Beauty and Fashion Shopping

I rarely pay full price when shopping, whether I’m buying beauty products or a new dress. I take advantage of several different ways to snag a discount in store and online, and I’d like to share some of my tips here.

Tip #1: Sign up for emails or memberships from your favorite companies and stores. You’ll not only get emails about new products, you’ll also get notices regarding periodic sales, including Friends & Family sales. Many e-retailers, like Beauty.com, YSL Beauty, and Giorgio Armani Beauty, also have sales at times other than their twice-yearly Friends & Families.

With some stores, like Sephora, Beauty.com, and Nordstrom, you can sign up for a member account. Making purchases allows you accumulate points that you can redeem for deluxe samples (Sephora), gift certificates (Nordstrom – it should be noted that membership requires you to open a credit or debit account with them), or store credit (Beauty.com’s drugstore dollars).

Tip #2: Check out services like Living Social or Gilt City that round up daily or weekly deals. Gilt City in particular is good if you’re looking for beauty products: recently it’s offered discounts on Estée Lauder, Fekkai, Bobbi Brown, and Space NK.

Tip #3: Similarly, certain magazines collaborate with retailers to offer their readerships monthly discounts. InStyle will often run promos for 20% off certain products or pieces, while Lucky often offers 20-30% off your purchase at a particular shop.

Tip #4: Don’t be afraid to Google. Sometimes discount codes are floating around on the interwebs but never make it into your inbox. Similarly, check out the facebook and Twitter accounts of the companies and shops you’re shopping with to see if any promos have been posted.

Tip #5: Shop with flash sale sites like Hautelook, Gilt, and My Habit. They often offer deep discounts on beauty products, some of which may have been limited edition or recently discounted, though they often have regular, current products.

Tip #6: Shop through cash back websites like Ebates. Some stores offer as much as 12% or 15% cash back when you click through Ebates first. Ebates frequently also has a list of current promos and discount codes.

Tip #7: If you like drugstore products, sign up for a CVS or a Walgreens rewards card. CVS offers better discounts, in my opinion: you can earn Extra Bucks by purchasing certain products or brands as well as through your overall spending. I also get an emailed coupon every Thursday, which typically gives me 20-30% or a dollar amount off a total purchase. Many CVSes also carry higher end brands like Vichy, LaRoche-Posay, and Lierac, which are also often discounted with BOGO 1/2 off deals. Walgreens cards also earn you points that translate into dollars off a purchase, but it seems to happen a lot less frequently.

Tip #8: Beauty blogs! Bloggers sometimes collaborate with e-shops to offer their readers a discount or a special gift with purchase. Many, like Nouveau Cheap, Allura Beauty, or Temptalia, compile a weekly list of deals. To that end, Daily Pretties is proud to present Daily Discounts, a page that will be regularly updated with a list of current promo codes. The page also has a contact form so that you can send in any discounts you find to share with the rest of us!
