Make Up For Ever Artist Liner in Matte Dark Brown (M-60): Review and Swatches

MUFEDarkBrownMatte

Along with the new Artist Shadows, Make Up For Ever has released a new line of Artist Liners. Having used up the last of my beloved Stila Smudge Stick in Damsel, I picked up an Artist Liner in Matte Dark Brown (M-60).

The Artist Liners are automatic twist-up liners and require no sharpening to access more product. Be careful when you twist up product, however, as they are not retractable! I also found that the liners require quite a few twists before more product becomes available.

Matte Dark Brown applies smoothly and evenly. You only need minimal pressure to achieve a dark, evenly opaque line. It’s also very thin liner, giving you more control over your desired lined thickness.

On the left is a swatch of the pencil and on the right is my attempt to smudge the liner after about a minute of it being on my skin. I used my Rock and Republic Smudge Brush (discontinued) to gently smudge the liner, and it stayed pretty well! If you are hoping to smudge this liner, you’ll need to work quickly, as once it sets, it’s are pretty much there until you take it off. Even then, I recommend using an eye makeup remover specifically designed to remove waterproof makeup, as the Artist Liners are difficult to remove with regular makeup remover or micellar solutions.

Overall, there’s very little not to like about this liner. I like this color as an alternative to black, especially in the summer. It’s dark enough to make your lashes look thicker but doesn’t look harsh as black can in warmer, sunnier weather. (MUFE also makes a lighter matte brown, Matte Bright Brown (M50), if you’re looking for a warmer chocolate brown.) The liner wears very comfortably in addition to being long-wearing. As I mentioned, the only shortcoming of the liner is the slight difficulty of pushing up more product and the inability to retract extra product if you happen to push it up too far.

Make Up For Ever’s Artist Liners are $19 from sephora.com.
